Liam Hewitt is the founder of The Goalposts of Scotland project (which you can follow with the #goalpostsofscotland hashtag on Instagram), Liam’s ongoing documentation of a place where he spent many of his formative years playing football. It’s an incredible project showcasing various landscapes throughout Scotland, all with the connective thread of goalposts of all shapes and sizes.

We had the pleasure of chatting with Liam about his project in more detail, which you'll find below.

How would you describe your relationship with football, and even the roots of your connection with the sport?

I have been obsessed with football from an early age mainly due to my dad. Growing up in South London most weekends were filled with watching him play for Beckenham Town or going to Selhurst Park to watch Crystal Palace. This was during some very exciting years of watching the Ian Wright & Mark Bright partnership.

Can you tell us about the origins of Goalposts of Scotland?

I moved to Scotland in 1993, but my love for football didn’t fade.

In 2022, I went back to visit an old town in the Scottish Borders I used to live in during the 90’s. I was delighted to see some of the old goalposts were still standing. It instantly sparked memories of my youth & the many games of World Cup that were played. Trying to create the goals scored from the likes of Romario. Baggio and George Weah. From the years 1994 till 1998 these goalposts were used almost every day. Sadly alco pops and PlayStations came into our lives & our evenings having a kickabout became less and less.

This project began after that visit. I decided to head back down to the Borders and get some images of all the old goalposts and football pitches I played on. It’s only now do I fully appreciate just how beautiful some of the locations are. Mainly from around Edinburgh, Glasgow, Lanarkshire and Fife – I also found this set in Stenhousemuir in early January, which I like.
