A few months ago, we were introduced to the League of Ireland’s oldest club, Athlone Town AFC. What we saw there was a proud institution in a fragile, precarious state.

Financial pressures, declining attendances, and an alienated town that should have been this club's greatest strength. Athlone’s women are the best in the country: already Champions of Ireland and competing in the UEFA Women’s Champions League qualifiers after being founded just five years ago.

But this season they’ve been playing in colours that fail to honour their achievements and the club’s long history, in hand-me-down kits designed for men.

We came to Athlone to help change that, working with newly-installed club leadership to restore this town’s pride in its team.

Last month, we watched as locals flooded back to the stadium, selling out not one but two Women’s Champions League qualifiers.

Scenes reminiscent of the club’s heyday 50 years ago when they held AC Milan to a stalemate in the European Cup.

It was incredible to witness, and it reflects everything we believe is worth fighting for in football: Pride in one’s home, (re)building relationships, and getting to witness memories being forged by the beautiful game.

This is what drives us.

So, for the remainder of their domestic season, and next week’s second round qualifiers of the UEFA Women’s Champions League, Athlone Town AFC are back in blue and black, with Where Is Football displayed across their iconic stripes. Not for our recognition, but to honour the generosity and togetherness we’ve been privileged to witness from an entire community — and to declare loudly that this is where football is, and where it will always be.
